Should we be excited when celebrities like Russell Brand go vegan?

Russell Brand recently announced that he is going vegan. Over the years I’ve learned to be cautiously enthusiastic about a celebrity embracing the vegan lifestyle.  If they decide that they no longer have the will or desire and go back to animal consumption, then it’s also broadcast to the masses. People can easily think veganism is too hard or just a trend.  If the celebrity is not a healthy vegan, then a stereotype of the weak and frail vegan may also be perpetuated. I’m sure for some it’s harder to come out than others but I hope he is taking this very seriously. Please, Russell, don’t let the animals down.

Forks Over Knives, the movie that sparked his decision to go vegan, is about the health benefits. I hope that he and his wife, Katy Perry, have also watched Earthlings so that they are aware of the animal abuse and torture that occurs from treating animals as commodities. Being vegan is far more than just what you eat. It is avoiding all products made from the exploitation of animals. This includes leather seats in cars, leather belts, clothing, shoes, wool, fur, body care, animal testing, etc.  It also means abstaining from entertainment derived from the slavery of animals; zoos, circuses, rodeos, aquariums, camel and elephant rides, and any other captive wildlife venues.

I have a good feeling about Russell and Katy.  I think we can be excited about these two. Congratulations on your enlightenment!
